An International Conference on the Cambrian Explosion

Since John and I are pretty sure we will not be able to afford to go to Bristol for SVP next year, we have found this alternative closer to home. Unfortunatly the field trips are already full, but luckily we hiked up to the Walcott quarry last fall. It was tough and I am not sure I want to do it again so soon ;)

An International Conference on the Cambrian Explosion

We invite you to attend a special Conference on the Cambrian Explosion to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Burgess Shale by Charles Doolittle Walcott. We cordially extend this invitation to all geologists, paleontologists, geochemists and biologists interested in the profound oganismal, ecological and environmental changes that occurred during the Precambrian-Cambrian transition. Morever, we think that this meeting would be of great interest to historians of geology and anyone curious about the origins of animals.

The meeting will be held at the Banff Centre for the Arts, August 4 - 6th, 2009. The resort town of Banff, located about 125km west of Calgary, Alberta , is one of the most scenic spots in the Canadian rocky Mountain National Parks and is only 80 km away from the discovery site of the Burgess Shale (near Field, British Columbia).

Spread the word: if you can't make it to Bristol, the North American alternative in 2009 will be the 8th Conference on Federal Fossil Resources (8CFR) May 18-21 in sunny St. George, Utah! It will be immediately followed by the Advances in Western Interior Late Cretaceous Paleontology and Geology conference, also in St. George (at the same digs). The 2009 annual Utah Friends of Paleontology conference will be held jointly with these in St. George, too -- it will be a veritable paleo lovefest for those who find the dollar-to-pounds exchange rate to be too intractable, as well as for those planning to hit Bristol anyway but just can't get enough of paleo conferences!

Plus, as far as I know, there's no place anywhere around St. George where you'll have to eat something called "spotted dick."

Cool! The Cambrian event sounds good, and so does the one on Federal Fossil Resources. In all honesty I have no idea if I'm going to make it to either (I'm probably not even going to be able to go to SVP this year, much less next) but it's still something to aim for. Thanks for getting the word out!

Hahaha, I was about to suggest the same conference that Jerry suggested. Our motto is, "Can't afford Bristol? Come to Utah!"
