Barbie's take on Evolution

The Miss USA contestants were each asked if they thought evolution should be taught in school. I am surprised which states representatives were for it, and which states wanted "both sides" taught....Note that Miss California/Miss USA 2011 is in favor of evolution being taught in schools.

Thanks to my aunt for the heads up!

I've tried to argue (mostly unsuccessfully) that it is not as bad as it looks. Most of the candidates who ask for "equal time" are parroting the view that the ID people and Wedge people have successfully spread around. If you sat down 51 randomly chosen non-science HS teachers from the upper midwest you'd get the same exact results, I'd wager. What I thought encouraging is that only a small number explicitly said "no" ... and in fact, 49 out of 51 said some form of "yes." ... so the vast majority of Miss USA contestants think that evolution should be taught in schools. That's the number to spread around, to get people to repeat, to memify, because that will make all the other barbies think the same thing. Bwahahaha!!!

Good points Greg. I like it! "49 out or 51 Barbies approve of teaching evolution in schools!"

To go along with what Greg said, I think its important to emphasize that most people accept evolution in some form. You get more flies with honey than vinegar, as the old saying goes. I think many people equate Creationism with their Faith. Although we use the term Creationist as a short-hand for a small, vocal group of people who take the Bible literally, not all people will see this distinction. If we can get people to see that evolution doesn't remove their faith, we are on the road to making serious headway.
